Rex is a supporting character in the Mega Crossover Time series. He is a Tyrannosaurus Rex who was found in a cave (now Isaak's Obstacle Chamber under his lair) in 1974 as a skeleton by Isaak's late grandfather and a group of his friends, one or more of them (presumably) being a paleontologist who was specifically into finding remains of dinosaurs. He was also partially responsible for destroying part of the ground to create the flooded pit full of crocodiles.

Rex may physically resemble Diablo, but in spite of that, he is far less violent than the latter. Like almost everyone else, Rex knows very well who Diablo is and tried to fight him once, but was defeated and became quite cowardly as a result of the experience. From there, even the mere mention of Diablo's name from another character is enough to send chills up his spine. He is also afraid of some of the elements, like lava and fire.

Appearance[]

Rex is a gigantic Tyrannosaurus bearing a strong resemblance to Diablo. However, he is dark gray with flame-shaped red stripes on his back instead of black with patterned red stripes, and his lower teeth show from the bottom of his mouth while Diablo's upper teeth show from the top of his mouth. However, like all T-Rexes, Rex has two fingers on each short arm, longer legs with three-toed feet, and a long tail with a red tip at its end. As a skeleton, Rex looked like any ordinary T-Rex skeleton with his jaws hanging open.

Personality[]

Rex is normally quite brave and noble, more than willing to contribute to any tasks Isaak has assigned him as returning gratitude for the latter reviving him. He was also somewhat crazed when it came to destroying things, as he assigned himself to duty of drawing a line in the cave floor with his tail while laughing maniacally, but understood dynamite protocol and fled immediately as per instruction to do so.

When it comes to Diablo being mentioned, however, he becomes incredibly cowardly. This likely resulted from a traumatic experience (probably a fight against him at one point in the past) that had to do with the evil Tyrannosaurus, and Rex tends to immediately turn and run at the mere mention of Diablo. He has also shown to have a fear of the elements, at least lava and fire, as shown when he screamed in horror at the sight of fire.

Biography[]

Rex was alive during the Age of Dinosaurs, and like all the others was killed as a part of the mass extinction; his remains were located inside a cave in a mountainside for millions and millions of years until his discovery.

While it is debated, it is heavily suggested that at one point during that time that he had fought against Diablo the mighty evil T-Rex, and developed a strong fear of him after being defeated by him.

In 1974, according to Isaak, his late grandfather from his mom's side and his friends who were likely a paleontology team went into the cave and found the remains of a Tyrannosaurus on the wall of the cave. Isaak's grandfather snapped a photo of it, but decided not to do anything with the remains, believing they weren't worth anything. 33 years later, in 2017 Isaak's team was looking for a place to add something new to their lair, when they came across the remains. Remembering what his grandfather told him before his passing, Isaak was intrigued and believed the skeleton he was told about and the one he found were the same.

He then found the old photo his grandpa took, and with this he was able to confirm that the skeleton he mentioned was the same as the one he was looking at. He and his followers excavated the remains out of the cave's wall and decided to bring the skeleton back to life, and so he did. He brought it to his scientific life-restoring machine and pressed the button, allowing the standing-position skeleton to grow skin and come back to life.

Seeing this, Isaak was impressed by his machine's power, since he hadn't used it before (that was in 2017, the first time he ever used it after discovering its existence when he found his lair and called it home), and approached the Tyrannosaurus with no fear. The dinosaur awakens and he introduces himself, before saying that he doesn't have a name. Isaak is confused, believing that he does and should have a name, but the dinosaur shrugs, telling him he doesn't. With that, Isaak decides to call him Rex, since he was a T-Rex. Rex liked the idea right away, acknowledging the fact that he is after all a T-Rex, and swore to work with Isaak until he was either dead or until Isaak had a victory. With that, Isaak said that he wouldn't die any time soon, and granted him immunity to age, to Rex's joy.

When Isaak announced that the cave would be the new Torture Chamber for prisoners if theft became a serious problem, Rex decided to involve himself. When Isaak said that he was going to use dynamite to construct a huge pit for crocodiles to inhabit, Rex agreed to help by dropping his tail tip into the ground and drew a line down the cave (literally from one end to the other) for the dynamite to be placed onto. After Isaak ordered everyone to leave the cave as he was about to light off the dynamite, Rex ran for it to the catwalk as Isaak lit the dynamite and teleported up to the dynamite to watch the explosion from a safe distance.

Rex told Isaak after that that he had drawn the line so he could straighten out the mess and make sure the dynamite did not fly around and destroy the catwalk, to which Isaak thanked him. Isaak and Rex then went for a walk around on the street, Isaak riding on Rex's back as Rex walks down the road, to everyone's shock as they see a living dinosaur. They enter a museum and Rex stands statue-still in it, pretending to be a statue.

When someone passes by his "statue spot" he is standing on and realizes he has never seen this one before, he closely examines the "statue". He looks close at the feet and tail, and they don't move at all. He then looks up at Rex's head and sees that nothing there is moving, either from the eyes or the teeth. He then tries to whack Rex's leg with a ruler, but still nothing happened. When the guest turned around and started walking away in confusion, Rex appears in front of him and roars, alerting him and everyone else in the museum that he was not at all a statue, but a real dinosaur. Another man in the background of the action said, "It's just Jurassic Park all over again". However, Rex does not attack the person he scared, and just walks away, to everyone's confusion as they did not at all believe that dinosaurs still existed.

Rex was later given a home by Isaak in the World of the Strange, where he evolves and grows to an enormous, 40-foot tall, 80-foot long Tyrannosaurus, much like Diablo did. When Isaak saw him next, he said, "My, how you've grown since I last saw you!", indirectly referencing Calvin and Hobbes (his favorite comic book; also indirectly foreshadowing the episode "Isaak meets Calvin" that was developed in Season 5). Deciding he enjoyed living there, Rex chose to stay there and find a place to live, but would encounter Diablo many times. For that reason, he was incredibly terrified and tried to find any place to hide that is closest to him. The other dinosaurs and creatures around him believe that his acts were justified, as Diablo was quite scary and responsible for everything bad that has ever happened.

Rex does not make a physical appearance again until Season 5, the episode "The Return of Rex", in which he is the titular character. In it, he learns that Diablo has been permanently defeated and sent straight to Hell after he was beaten in a fight, but still cowers over his name. Rex checks in on Isaak and finds out that he now has a girlfriend named Jenna, and treats her charmingly, as if she were his girlfriend. His charisma toward her actually made Isaak feel a little jealous, but he knows that Rex is not trying to win her heart and steal her from him. After all, it would be nothing but odd if a human being fell in love with a Tyrannosaurus Rex. He also learns about her and Isaak's ability to shapeshift into any creature they want, much to his shock as he never knew Isaak had that ability at all. Rex is later revealed to have taken over Diablo's old volcano, despite his fear of fire and lava, so he came up with a solution: to just stay away from it, and he'll be fine. Fortunately for him, he had been succeeding in doing so.

He later visited Isaak in the now-fully constructed Obstacle Chamber, narrowly avoiding all of the obstacles in it and telling him that everything made significant improvements. Isaak agrees, and he was just walking through it for fun. He also showed him his ability to regenerate after a death, and allowed a crocodile in the pit to kill him. Rex freaks out, but when Isaak regenerates on a plank of wood above the pit, Rex realizes he was right and laughs with him over it. Isaak laughs as well, but is distracted by a crocodile snapping his jaws behind him. Isaak runs up and grabs a huge fish before throwing it to the jumping croc, who eats it quickly. Rex then decides to leave as Isaak says his goodbyes, Isaak promising to come and visit him sometime.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, Rex was initially conceived as a villain and a follower to Diablo. However, this version of the story was scrapped, and he was changed to a tragic hero instead.
  • Rex and Xin are the only two heroic tyrannosaurs with black/dark gray and red coloration.
  • Rex was named either after the word "rex" in his species name Tyrannosaurus rex ("rex" meaning "king" in Latin), or by the character of the same name from the Toy Story franchise. In the initial concept art he actually resembles Rex from Toy Story a bit, obviously minus his lifelike form, his color scheme and, less notably, the number of fingers he has (Rex from Toy Story inaccurately having three while Rex from Mega Crossover Time has two).
  • Initially, Rex was actually going to die when he was accidentally rolled into a pit of lava by one of Isaak's followers, against Isaak's protests as he tried to save Rex. The entire scene was cut out so Rex could remain alive, as a long-time hero was not meant to die like that.
