Alligator is a supporting character in the Mega Crossover Time series and the main protagonist of the Sewer Life series. He is a giant alligator who lives in the sewers, having earned the status of its king once he had committed one too many heroic deeds (which were seen as fit to becoming royal by the other inhabitants of the sewers). He is also Isaak's best animal friend, and one of his strongest allies, as well as Murdoc's archenemy.

Despite officially being an alligator, he looks a lot more like a crocodile.

Appearance[]

Alligator is an enormous 24-foot long, 17-foot tall, American Alligator with medium-dark green scales, a lighter underbelly, and red eyes. He looks more like a crocodile instead of an alligator, because he has a thin V-shaped jaw and teeth showing from only his lower jaw, which is wider than the upper jaw, and the bottom teeth are longer than the top teeth. He has four fingers on his front limbs and three toes on his back limbs. He has two rows of black spikes on his back while his claws are also black. He is capable of standing both bipedally and quadrupedally, and when he stands on two legs, his tail is revealed to be seven feet long in addition to his 17-foot-tall body. This makes him far taller than the average man, his height even surpassing that of Bigfoot. He is half the size of Murdoc, his arch-nemesis, who is 48 feet and can only walk on four legs.

Usually, his pupils are rounded, but when he gets angry or if he is pranking someone, Alligator tends to revert his pupils from rounded shapes to narrow vertical slits found in real life alligators.

Personality[]

Alligator is normally pragmatic, honorable, respectful, promising and harmless, with a tendency to avoid eating humans unless he absolutely has to. He will attack and eat other animals, however, when he is hungry or involved in a conflict. He is also proven to be a clever gator, because he wears clothes to confuse people into thinking he is among them, before ripping off his disguise and revealing himself to be an alligator in actuality.

In spite of normally being a hero, especially made notorious for fighting Murdoc, Alligator has some strange, unscrupulous qualities. For instance, after he grew up, he stole chairs and other items humans use in society to claim them for himself, but he replaced the stolen items with other counterparts of the same item to make ends meet. How this exactly came about is unknown, but it is implied that he just stole them. Also, after he stopped working with law enforcement, Alligator became somewhat antisocial and shady, and fought for his community in the sewers far less often, but did not abuse his position as king, yet again still revealing him to be honorable, as he was always there for his subjects if he was ever needed.

Despite not necessarily wanting to eat humans because of their kind treatment toward him as a child before being flushed down the toilet, he will still eat them as he sees it fit. He had only done this five times, however, and also made sure that his human victims (let alone any victims of his) were alive while stuffing them down his throat whole, though it could be argued that he was simply doing this to avoid causing those he had eaten a painful death. Using his ability to just swallow things whole, he usually does this unless he has to chew something, like loose bones when he was eating a genuine meal.

Alligator is also not above pranking people around him, as shown when he pranked Isaak and Jenna in the sewers, disguised as a sewer monster (using grease paint to cover his face and make himself look like a monster). However, he only does this merely for amusement rather than truly malicious goals, and is not a malicious character at all. He pranks Isaak the most because he's his best friend, and is always there for him when his parents can't be, Isaak sometimes even seeing him as an older brother figure. Alligator, in return, sees him as a younger brother, and Jenna as a sister, in spite of her being Isaak's girlfriend.

Alligator is also extremely defensive of his friends, as he ate Charles Prick in favor of his old friends Arthur and Robby (back when he lived in the asylum), he ate April when she tried to forcefully become Isaak's girlfriend, and when he rescued Isaak from The Springed Trap when he encountered and tried to kidnap, attack and kill the latter. He also aggressively fought Murdoc in favor of the animals in the Tampa City Zoo.

Nevertheless, Alligator seems to possess a great code of honor and more of a good side than a bad one. For instance, he had saved his friends' lives multiple times (as mentioned above), has allowed humans to live in peace unless he absolutely had to eat them, he had almost immediately looked for a specific section of the sewers to live in (revealing he is very respectful of laws, also implying why he temporarily worked with law enforcement), he genuinely cared for everyone around him, and allowed his relatives to do whatever they wanted when under his rulership in the sewers. He even took the extra time and effort to swim all the way from Florida to Louisiana when he receives a letter from his relatives in Louisiana, before inviting two of them, his cousins Tori and Maurice, to go and live with him in the sewers.

History[]

Alligator was born on July 29, 1991 in a swamp surrounding New Orleans, Louisiana. He had only lived with his parents at the time, and to make matters worse, he was only two days old when they died.

On the day of his parents' deaths, Alligator watched in absolute horror as his parents were encountered, attacked, fought with, and killed by hunters who wanted alligator meat and skin. He hid himself from view and watched in absolute horror as his parents' corpses were then taken by the hunters. Not wanting the same fate his parents met, he made a small underground tunnel leading to a swamp and found his way to a pet store in town. He only lived there for several hours, however, before being adopted by a family consisting of a mother, father, brother and sister (both of whom were young kids).

He lived with them for two more weeks in Louisiana before the family decided to move to Florida, taking Alligator with them. He was treated very kindly and with respect and appreciation by the kids all throughout his time living with them, as they continued treating him like this until he was finally flushed down the toilet. The father had had enough of raising a gator for a pet at long last, and allowed his family to say final goodbyes as Alligator gave them all a little wave, while the father rubbed his finger on Alligator's head, showing his affections. Alligator was then flushed down the toilet, and he decided to never hurt humans at all because of how kindly they treated him during the ride through the pipes. He eventually landed in the sewers and decided to stay there, only for a frog to hop by and explain the Law of the Sewers to him.

Despite being a young alligator, he understood the rules and started looking for a specific room-like section of the sewers, and it took him some time. He didn't want to live in the back of the tunnel forever, and was about to give up. As he went for the exit, however, he spotted an empty section and decided to check it out. After figuring out that it was indeed empty, he decided to call it home for the rest of his life.

In his mind, he decided to build up a life like humans, meaning he'd have to get a chair, table, couch, bed, television set, and many other assets. However, knowing he lacked the physical strength as well as assistance, he decided he had to grow up first. At the age of one year, he started eating various sewer items, mutating and alternating his appearance, and he grew ever-larger and developed more crocodile-like features; his snout became thinner and his lower jaw became a bit wider than the upper jaw, thus exposing his bottom teeth, and he grew up to be a monstrous, 24-foot crocodilian.

27 years later, Alligator grew to be content and happy with what he had done for himself.

During his childhood, he was relentlessly pursued by his adulthood arch-nemesis, a giant saltwater crocodile named Murdoc, who tried numerous times to eat him.

In the present, Alligator is aged 28 and a giant alligator, being almost entirely harmless toward humans, with only 1 in 100 of them falling victim to him eating them. However, every time he did, it was for good reason; in spite of that, he was still a clever trickster and used his brains over brawn, but was still immensely caring and loyal to those who treat him the same way. Toward enemies like Murdoc, he acted hostile and became a crazed fighter in attempts to defeat him, using tactics very similar to a real life crocodile wrestler. Alligator would always win his fights against Murdoc, whom had been killed and revived twice.

At the time of Murdoc's death, Alligator felt remorse for him, in spite of being enemies, possibly because he knew the only challenge in his life was gone. However, he was happy when Murdoc got revived, both out of remorse and because his challenge had come back, and had gotten used to fighting him in a number of ways, including riding his back, to Murdoc's anger and frustration.

Alligator eventually got two roommates, who were both alligators named Roger and Charlie, who had nearly-equal personalities to him; they hated bringing harm to humans. Despite his hatred of bringing harm to humans, he usually means he hates killing and eating them; when it comes to fighting or stealing from them, he is no coward and usually is more than willing to fight when the respective human has bad intentions. An example is April, whom he attacked when she tried to force Isaak to become her boyfriend. He even devoured her, but with pity after doing so. The first time he tried to, he exposed his pity, and April anticipated this and took it as a sign of weakness. She tied his mouth shut with rope, but failed to tie his limbs up, allowing Alligator to untie his jaws and continue fighting, eventually succeeding in eating her.

Alligator later encounters Isaak when he is getting ready to go to church, doing so twice; the first being when he openly broke in and snatched Isaak due to being his best friend (and also remembering his hatred for church societies and going to things he had nothing or very little to do with), causing panic at the sight of a giant alligator, but the break-in had gotten Isaak in trouble. The second time was when he was more clever and snuck in to rescue him, but they ended up staying behind to eat a lot of food, to everyone's shock. Alligator and Isaak then left through the sewers.

On the fourth and final round of pranking, Isaak and Jenna recruited Alligator to help them prank people, but the crocodilian makes a mistake when he inadvertently exposes himself, and is nearly killed twice. However, he always managed to barely survive the gunfire aimed at him by William Hunter, and he escapes into the sewers when Isaak is alerted of a break-in at his home.

Alligator and Isaak later reunite when Isaak, bored out of his mind, heads into the sewers and tells Alligator (who is also bored) that they should go explore Isaak's old middle school Cedar Heights to bring back some old memories. Alligator agrees, revealing himself to have known about the middle school, and heads there with Isaak one evening during the coronavirus lockdown (they never get caught throughout the whole adventure). They enter the building through a hidden entrance/exit they had never discovered before and begin hearing strange noises. They head into the basement where the old locker rooms were (referred to as "the Dungeon" because of its similarity to one) and see the disturbing sight of a man being killed by another alligator. The creature follows them as they make their escape, but on the way out, Isaak hears something from within his old science teacher's classroom. He peers inside and sees nothing but darkness. He doesn't dare to shine his light into the room, but when they hear a loud clang, followed by heavy footsteps coming up the stairs from behind them again, the two agree that it is time to run. They make their escape and retreat into the sewers.

Isaak and Alligator later visited Disney World in Florida, not far from where either character live. As they are walking, they spot Coco, a magic talking cookie who is very funny. As Isaak is amazed by his comedy sense, Alligator sees him merely as nothing more than a snack to be eaten, and ambushes him from within a studio before chasing him down to a separate area, where he intends to eat him. Isaak attempts to stop him from attacking Coco, but Alligator says to him he's starting to annoy him and that he won't let anyone stop him from eating. He then leaps at Coco and kills and eats him. Horrified, everyone remembers Coco and his amazing talents, as Isaak severely reprimands Alligator for his acts. He silences him by tying rope around Alligator's mouth, not wanting to hear of his apology.

Alligator later manages to untie the rope from around his mouth and finds Isaak to apologize to him. At first, Isaak still will not fall for his apology, but eventually forgives him when he is begged for a second chance, Alligator not wanting to be betrayed. Isaak sees that Alligator truly doesn't want to lose him, and apologizes for being so hard on him. Alligator finds it easy to forgive him this time, and they make amends by going swimming in the river. As they do, Alligator seemingly goes missing and Isaak stops to search for him. However, when he sees the outline of a large crocodilian swimming toward him from under the water, he figures it is just Alligator, and looking under the water, he finds himself to be right.

Alligator is later encountered again when he is sleep-swimming throughout the rising water level in the sewers, bellowing all throughout it and keeping Isaak awake that night. He climbs down a manhole ladder and wakes Alligator up by screeching for his attention. Alligator snaps awake and swims over to him, telling him to be quiet as he's borderline snoring. Alligator groggily says he can't help it as he moves up the manhole and decides to sleep there for the night, realizing that the water level in the sewers is going up. Remembering that he already closed and secured his door to his sewer section to ensure it doesn't flood, he feels comfort, and leaves the sewers entirely. He looks down, and sees the sewer water emptying out into a giant crater that quickly turns into an underground river, before brushing it off.

Alligator, Isaak, Jenna and Alex later meet up after the sewer incident, and decide to head to Isaak's main residence. Arriving there, Isaak gives Jenna and Alex a tour of the place, while Alligator lays in the driveway and heats up. Being a crocodilian, he knows it's important for him and shortly after falls into a deep sleep. Isaak tries to wake him up from it when the time comes to go, but Alligator is too far gone. Seeing he can't wake him up that easily, he drives a short stick somewhat up Alligator's left nostril from on his nose, before retreating onto his back to avoid the sneeze. Alligator wakes up after sneezing and asks Isaak what that was for, and Isaak tells him that it's time to head back to the lair. Realizing he's right, Alligator tells him and his two friends to hop onto his back, and it's going to be a long ride.

They arrive back in Florida sometime later, where Isaak's Lair is. When they get there, Alligator falls asleep after a long ride through the sewers, having been awake through all of it, while Isaak, Jenna and Alex climb out of the sewers via a manhole ladder. Once they're out, they leave Alligator to keep sleeping, and he is too far gone to be awoken anymore.

It is not known what became of Alligator during the final fight and defeat against Diablo, but it is possible that he just stayed in the sewers. He wasn't involved at all, nor did he attend the celebrations, so it is implied that he didn't know about it somehow. After Murdoc redeemed himself, Alligator still didn't appear, but when he did make his next appearance after Isaak fell into the sewers, he wasn't above informing Alligator about it. Alligator didn't believe him at first until he actually saw Murdoc fighting crime, and began to respect him for that. Later on, Alligator actually sides with Murdoc to help fend off the criminals trying to take over Isaak's Lair, and fights wildly. His intelligence and Murdoc's brute strength prove to take the advantage as they defeat their enemies and get them arrested.

Later on, Alligator and Isaak take Murdoc back to the sewers, where Alligator welcomes him to live now that he's redeemed himself. Murdoc decides to stay in his swamp anyway.

In The Beasts of Mega Crossover Time[]

In The Beasts of Mega Crossover Time, set 10,000 years after the original crossover, Alligator doesn't at first physically appear, but is excessively mentioned by Isaak and Jenna alike. Both of them thought about him and believed him to have passed away, but little did either of them know that Alligator managed to survive the many years after crafting the One Bracelet, which allowed him to lose his ability to age so long as he wore it.

Alligator left the sewers and decided to follow Isaak, Jenna, and Murdoc to Africa. He swam for miles and miles throughout the ocean without a rest, and eventually succeeded in arriving to Africa, even if it meant becoming extremely tired out. Being an alligator, Alligator kept his mouth shut and even taped it shut, and withstood the harsh conditions all the way until he arrived to the beach.

Alligator only took his immortality bracelet, a pair of blue glasses, and also a non-brand flashlight that he eventually ended up abandoning when it broke on him during the journey.

Trivia[]

  • Alligator and Isaak can often be considered to be a mirror to each other. Alligator is able to talk to humans, while Isaak is able to talk to animals. Both of them are still able to talk to others of their own kind, obviously. They are both clever and leaders/kings of an army/community/empire. The two of them also work with one another, and because they have a lot in common, they are best friends and excessively loyal to each other. Unlike Isaak, however, Alligator does not have a wide amount of other powers beside talking to humans while Isaak can talk to animals. He also is full-time an alligator, while Isaak is a human who can change into anything he wants (including an alligator). Alligator also does not have a girlfriend or love interest, while Isaak does have one.
    • Murdoc was originally conceived as being able to talk to humans, but it is unlikely that he still has the ability, since he rarely ever seems to talk when around a human, other than Isaak.
  • Alligator resembles Tick-Tock the Crocodile from the 1953 Disney film Peter Pan, and shares the ability to swallow people whole with him and King Gator from All Dogs Go to Heaven. He also resembles Swampy from the mobile app game Where's My Water?. However, he differentiates from both of them in terms of size, color, wider attributions to anthropomorphism, and means of locomotion (he walks both on two and four legs).
    • The manner in which he devoured a man intruding in the sewers was also similar to Tick-Tock trying to eat Captain Hook on one occasion.
  • Alligator was originally designed differently; he was a dark teal crocodilian resembling a caiman with shorter jaws, his teeth showed from both jaws, and he was thinner with narrower features and a longer tail. His teeth were also smaller and the same length on both jaws, and he was only able to stand on four legs like Murdoc. It is unknown why he was changed from this design to his current one.
  • For some reason, Alligator had rounder, thicker features earlier on in his introduction; his teeth were also further apart and very misaligned. However, in his later appearances from the second half of Season 3 to the present, he has thinner, more triangular features and his teeth are closer together and more neatly aligned. It is unknown why this was changed.
  • Charlie seems to be Alligator's doppelganger, minus his dark teal colors on his back with a pale green underbelly, while Alligator is entirely green (a darker back and a lighter underbelly).
  • Alligator was originally conceived to have easily defeated and eaten Murdoc, who was conceived as a frog rather than a giant crocodile who rode on a tortoise, and was named "Lut" instead. However, this was cut because it was part of the crossover's initial much darker context to what it currently is (which is still semi-dark, but nowhere near as much as it was).
  • Real alligators have thin, vertical, narrow slits for pupils all the time. Alligator usually has cartoonish round pupils, but they do become narrow slits whenever he gets angry or if he decides to play a prank on someone.
  • Alligator is one of the few sewer alligators to have never left the sewers ultimately and lived somewhere else or been killed. Others are Charlie, and Stan and Carmine from The Wild (released in 2006).
    • This only applies to the original crossover; in The Beasts of Mega Crossover Time, Alligator did eventually leave the sewers, though he immediately started living underground again as a reference to it when he went to the jungle that Isaak and Jenna did.
  • Alligator has claimed his real name is not actually "Alligator". Initially, concepts presented his name as being "William", but was changed because the name "William" was overused. It is unknown what his real name is, and will remain that way, since the author of the story had difficulty coming up with a good name for him.
  • Alligator's role as king of the sewers after his heroic acts to achieve such status was seemingly based on King Gator from All Dogs Go to Heaven that was released in 1989. He even resembles him a little bit, minus his colors and lack of features King Gator has (such including a small "crown", obesity, rings on his finger, big lips, eye shadow, etc.). He is also more crocodile-like and presumably shorter than King Gator is.
  • Alligator is one of the few kings to not wear a crown at any time.
  • Alligator is also one of the few kings to not ever abuse his power.
  • Alligator is one of the few characters to never interact with either Joseph or Elizabeth.
  • Alligator is one of the few villains to have not been driven by his tragic past, presumably because he had forgotten about it (he was, after all, an infant when it happened, and he is currently 28 years old).
  • When Alligator eats Coco, it can be considered his first semi-villainous role. However, it must be noted that he had been stealing and robbing various places in the past, but this was never shown. He only revealed he did it through dialogue.
  • The scene where Alligator jumps on and devours Coco was criticizable due to how dark it was. Most comical characters, especially heroes, remained alive in the crossover as a means to allow their comedy to thrive, regardless as to whether it was aimed centrally at the protagonists or not. Not even villainous comical characters suffered a gruesome fate of being eaten alive by alligators.
  • Alligator is even taller than Bigfoot is. Bigfoot is anywhere from 8 to 11 feet tall (the one in the crossover being close to 11 feet), while Alligator is 17 feet. Some concept art even shows Alligator resting his arm on Bigfoot's head.
  • Because he has traits of both alligators and crocodiles, Alligator qualifies for both the "Alligators" and "Crocodiles" category.
